Jieshou Colored Pottery undergoes a two-stage firing process: the bisque firing followed by the glaze firing. The temperature difference between the two stages is minimal, with the bisque firing conducted at a slightly lower temperature than the glaze firing.
Bisque Firing
The bisque firing takes place in an earthen kiln and usually lasts between 12 to 20 hours. The process begins by gradually heating the kiln to 400°C to remove any moisture from both the kiln and the clay piece. This step is crucial to prevent defects like "orange peel" texture or bubbling during the subsequent glaze firing. Once the temperature exceeds 400°C, the kiln is sealed and the temperature is raised to 700-800°C. After maintaining this temperature for about an hour, the firing process is halted, and the kiln is allowed to cool naturally.
Applying the Green Glaze
After the bisque firing, Jieshou pottery is typically decorated with a layer of copper glaze. When fired at high temperatures, this copper glaze transforms into a vivid green, adding a striking contrast to the red and white hues. The green glaze serves as the final flourish of Jieshou's tri-color palette, creating a shimmering, lively effect on the pottery's surface.
Glaze Firing
Jieshou pottery is classified as low-fire glazed pottery, using a locally prepared transparent lead glaze. Before firing, this glaze appears as a vibrant orange-red; afterward, it turns clear, providing a thin yet glossy surface. The glaze is mixed with water to form a slurry and is applied to the bisque-fired pottery using the pouring method. After drying for one to two days, the piece is placed in the kiln for the glaze firing. The process mirrors that of the bisque firing, with the temperature controlled at around 1000°C, lasting for two days and nights. The result is a lustrous, tri-colored piece that embodies the tradition and artistry of Jieshou Colored Pottery.
